The concept is simple: instead of searching for one revolutionary improvement, identify every component of performance and make each one slightly better. A one-percent improvement in one area may seem insignificant. But a series of one-percent improvements, accumulated throughout an entire system, can produce a substantially better result.
Gallyon says it has adopted this philosophy extensively in designing and prototyping its modern sporting shotguns. The company’s objective is to improve performance by small amounts across multiple areas, with the aggregate result being improvements in user performance, accuracy, reliability and enjoyment.

Bespoke Shotguns
Gallyon places enormous emphasis on custom gun fitting. The company says each gun is fitted to its customer by approved specialists, with the goal of making the shotgun an extension of the shooter.
That means the “system” isn’t actually the shotgun. It’s the shotgun + shooter. Therefore, Gallyon’s fitting process isn’t merely a luxury associated with bespoke British guns. Within the marginal-gains philosophy, it is a performance variable.
Hand Finishing Still Matters
If the company believes in microns, precision machining, why bother with traditional hand finishing? Because marginal gains doesn’t mean replacing craftsmanship with machinery.
It means using the best available method for every component of the system.
Gallyon says that after precision manufacturing, components are hand finished, with the guns assembled and finished under the supervision of Master Gunmakers.
A shotgun that is one percent easier to mount, one percent more predictable in its movement, one percent more comfortable under recoil and one percent more consistent in its mechanical operation may not produce a dramatic difference on the first bird.
But over hundreds or thousands of repetitions, small improvements can become meaningful.
That is their philosophy of incremental improvements.
