60 Seconds With Michael McIntosh

Even when the shot charge is held to optimum level, too much powder produces its own sort of overload. This probably doesn’t wreck patterns quite as badly as too much shot does, but a heavy powder charge doesn’t confer any advantage. It’s a fact of shotgun ballistics that the faster you drive pellets out of the muzzle, the faster they slow down once in the air. The way to get more punch and more reach is to use heavier pellets, not more powder.

This tip came from the book “Shotguns and Shooting” by Michael McIntosh.

‍

Of “Shotgunning in the Automatic Mind,” Gray's Sporting Journal said:

Warren Watson and Mike Wilfley have produced an important, perhaps a landmark book on the shooting art. With shooting as with dog training, the proof will be in the results….  This well-designed book takes you through some eye-opening advice for "core physical skills") vision, posture, mount, rhythm, lead, basic shooting) to "core mental skills" (pre-shot routine, advanced techniques, target reading) on to shooting from "the automatic mind," a combining of the muscle memory of core physical skills (the heart of instinctive shooting) with core mental skills at the conscious and, if the method works, subconscious level.

In their review, Shooting Sportsman wrote:

Shotgunning in the Automatic Mind offers an uncommonly clear, concise and stress-free examination of the art and science of shooting.... The 256 pages are filled with easy-to-understand photos, diagrams and charts, reminding readers that the mysteries around why they miss really shouldn’t be mysteries at all; they’re just mistakes that haven’t been analyzed carefully....

‍In its article about the book, Shotgun Life wrote:

“Frankly, it took years before the book took shape as a finished manuscript.” Mike said. “Warren and I wrestled everything to the ground many times. It took a lot of work and time to make it a detailed, well-organized, easy-to-follow, complete instructional guide that could impart Warren’s impeccable training process.”
