Don Currie's Shooting Tips...

We sometimes describe this as a “strobing target”, typically found in the woods. As we get older, our eyes are slower to react (sometimes referred to as “accommodation”) to changing light conditions. Most of the time, however, I find that the problem is either with the shooting glasses of the shooter or that the shooter is not using his or her eyes efficiently. There are some basic guidelines you can follow when shooting in this type of light conditions.
First, shoot in a good pair of non-polarized shooting glasses. If you are shooting in polarized lenses, they will decrease the level of visual contrast between a target and its background.
Second, you should use a lens color that is the lightest possible for the existing conditions without causing eye strain. If you are forced to squint, you need a darker lens color. If you are having trouble picking up the target visually, either your eyes are in the wrong place to pick up the target or your lens color is too dark.
Third, you should be tested by an ophthalmologist for color blindness and cataracts. If you do have some level of color blindness, using certain lens colors can compensate for it.
Fourth, if you are having trouble seeing targets against green foliage, the color of lens you are using may be the issue. Pilla’s 22N or PN progressive light adaptive lenses (both are purple) are great choices for low-light in-the-woods conditions. For very low light in-the-woods conditions, the PL Progressive Lime colored lens works well. Last, but certainly not least, select and commit to your breakpoint as you normally would on any target.
A consistent visual pickup point and breakpoint on this type of target ensures that you will be acquiring and breaking the target at the same spot and with the same intensity of light for each pair.
